Sheryl is a certified Yoga Teacher under RYT-200 from ispirit.asia, a new age Yoga School in Malaysia. With 6 years of practising prior to her certification, her objectives will be sharing her techniques and correct alignments in yoga poses. She believes that yoga help to relax the mind when practice with correct breathing techniques. She specialised in teaching hatha yoga, restorative yoga and gentle flow. She hopes to inspire more people to practise yoga as a way of life and welcome all level of students to come and experience yoga. No one is too old or too young to experience yoga. This is one of the key point during TTC that options will be given in the event students are unable to perform certain poses due injury or inflexibility. She believes with perseverance and constant practice, nothing is impossible. Sheryl herself is still constantly worked on her own practise in Ashtanga Yoga- Primary Series. Her favourite quote would be “Come and experience yoga and let it be your lifelong commitment to inner peace”.

Sheryl comes to yoga about 6 years ago. Back then she don’t have any background in movement training at all. 4 years ago, she was introduced to Mysore style Ashtanga Yoga by her teacher. For Sheryl, yoga is a path of self-realisation that can only be achieve by unification of body, mind and soul. The practice of Mysore style increases her body awareness and soon realised that movement with breathe actually is a type of moving meditation to calm the mind and soul.

Yoga helps you to experience calmness and peace between poses. Yoga asanas does have a psychological effects towards anyone when practise with Ujjayi breathing and being aware of body movement. For Sheryl, inversion poses help her to conquer fear of heights and discomfort of staying upside down. Her personal experience on psychological effect will be to learn to take it easy and accept sometimes life can be upside down too.

Inspired by a picture of yoga pose in a woman’s magazine at a young age, she hoped one day she can pick up yoga as a hobby. Back then, she can easily mimicked the Full Cobra pose within seconds when she saw the picture.

For the first few months of practising Ashtanga yoga, Sheryl can’t even lift herself up in Chaturanga. She lie down flat on the floor with no arms and shoulder strength at all. It was her teacher, Nic Cheah who constantly motivates her and slowly build up strength in her movement. She believes that correct poses alignments not only strengthens your body and enjoy the full benefits of the poses but also important to prevent injuries. It may sounds funny to hear that the most fearful word during an Ashtanga class would be ‘Chaturanga’ back then.

Sheryl was trained as a yoga teacher by ispirit.asia. She have been looking around for a yoga TTC course for about 1 year before that. She considered taking the course in Thailand, India or do it locally in Malaysia. It was as if this TTC was pre-arranged for her that the TTC dates coincides with a planned break from her corporate job. She immediately sign up when she saw the first TTC conducted by ispirit.asia. The programme was superb and prepared her well to conduct class in proper sequence, physical body adjustment, technical knowledge of asanas, yoga philosophy, anatomy and so on.

As a holder of RYT 200, she specialised in hatha yoga, restorative yoga and gentle flow as a start of her career. Prior to her yoga teacher certification, she has attend workshop by Michelle Lam, Judy Krupp, Simon Borg-Oliver, Briohny Smyth and expose to a many teachers and fellow yogi around the world when she attended Bali Spirit Festival in 2013.

Sheryl is dedicated in sharing her knowledge to help students to understand the importance of correct physical alignment and deepen their knowledge in yoga philosophy. Her favourite quote will be “Come and experience yoga as a lifelong commitment to inner peace”. Namaste!
