ABOUT YOGI AMITRAM

P Profile Yogi Amitram1

YOGI AMITRAM, (Yogi G)
Founder and Director of Rishikesh Yogashram Trust, Rishikesh, India A freelance travelling YOGI as a “Yoga Philosophy and Meditation Teacher” also an environmentalist, Social activist and humanitarian.

Bio
Yogi Amitram was born into an Brahman family in Varanasi, Northern India, and raised with a strong spiritual foundation under the direct guidance of his grandfather and first Guru ‘Babuji’, whose life inspired him to follow the path of kindness and service to humanity. At the same time he completed his post graduate degree in Information Management and tried to fulfill his family’s expectations and started a career in the corporate world. But deeply listening to his self and aligning with his own nature, he soon felt that this was not the journey he wanted to go for, and realised that the UNIVERSE already had another plan for him. So he decided to give up his job to follow his real inner call: fully dedicating himself to learn and spiritually grow in his practice, to teach and share his knowledge and skills with the most diverse kind of audience and to travel to meet new cultures and bring his experience to new students and friends around the world as in his vision “the whole world is one family” ,’Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’.

Skills
Yogi Amitram has been studying closely with many respected teachers, yoga Schools and Ashrams and working with the different Yoga Schools and yoga centers and ashrams in India and abroad as a yoga philosophy and meditation Teacher, providing a great and valuable contribution in some Yoga Teacher Training Program (YTTC) meeting the  Yoga Alliance requirements. He has 10 years of teaching experience (around 2500 hours) in India and abroad. Yogi Amitram has been defined by most of his students as “a great bridge between east and west”: he combines eastern wisdom and knowledge with western understanding of life. His foundation is strongly rooted in the original tradition of yoga and meditation, but his approach to people and life is holistic, open minded and international. All his classes are based on three things: WHAT, WHY and HOW. These words make sense to the western mind and so even the most complex teachings become easy to understand. He loves to travel to share his knowledge, he naturally and openly shares with people what he practices and learns from life, as he fully lives according to a traditional yogic lifestyle, on and off the mat. His personal style of teaching relates interesting stories and talks on the meaning of life and death, on oneness and unconditional love. Yogi Amitram has developed a unique way of communicating and interacting with students, teaching theories and practices according to ancient texts but always relating them more practically to everyday life according to his personal experience; he is always open and available to answer questions with a unconditional love, kindness and deep compassion. He surely brings into his teachings his loving empathy, but also great sense of humour, making every class a valuable moment of learning and growth, in a warm, light and joyful atmosphere, providing each student a great chance for a holistic inner transformation.

Mentoring and Coaching
Yogi Amitram is also a skilled mentor and a lifecoach: he offers private sessions to a limited number of selected individuals who are ready to progress to the next level in their spiritual life, by
teaching them how to understand themselves better through unique, direct, one to one learning experience. These sessions can be provided in person or via skype call and they are offered on a limited basis depending on Yogi Amitram’s availability and current location.

Rishikesh Yogashram Trust
Yogi Amitram founded Rishikesh Yogashram(Trust) : Meditation center, Himalayas, India in order to fullfill a vision that offers humanity a sacred space in a eco yoga village setteing based on Gift economy, where he built an earthship building (building made out of earth and waste material like jeep tirs, glass bottels and reclaimed wood) and eartbag building (building made out of earthfilled used rice bags) stone houses by just useing the stones avilable in the ashram prperty and green houses to grow there own food etc. the idea is to create a self sustable yogic lifestyle and share the sacred space with other fellwo seekers of Truth.

I was very lucky to meet Yogi Amitram during a Yoga teacher training, and I think whole group is calling him a friend meanwhile. Without saying what is good or wrong, he gave us time to develop own thoughts and understanding while we started leaving a new (yogic) life. With other words his teaching is uncomplicated, but still challenging and just right. Amitram infuses with pure love for yoga and yogic life. He inspires with his knowledge, experience, wise words, sensitivity, happiness and of course his soft and deep smile! Yogi Amitram is a very special person. He always created a safe space and allowed to open up and listen to the heart, to believe in myself and the universe. His personality is most memorable and definitely life changing for many people. And this is what my friends are saying about me today: ” Svetlana sees world with different eyes and goes positively through the life. Enjoying every moment and aspiring people next to her, having control and enjoying the life.” Isn’t it great?! Love ~Svetlana (Lana)

Namaste dear Amitram! Here is my feedback about your classes during our advanced teacher training in June 2016, at Vikasa. I’m particularly proud to say that I could attend such amazing classes with you. Your knowledge , your dedication towards us and the passion you are sharing on a daily basis, is a tremendous source of inspiration for me. All the content is so valuable and I’m eager to come everyday, to learn new concepts, to listen to your stories, to chant mantras with you…etc. You always make yourself available for your students, and for me you are definitely more than a teacher. You became part of my new yogi family, and I am very pleased to be able to be part of this journey, and share it with such a great person like you. I would like to thank you for your patience. Sometimes the atmosphere in class could be a bit hectic, but you always keep your smile, and your calm with us. I really appreciate that. There is less tension, and more open minded spirit thanks to you. I am really proud of the trust you put in ourselves. And I’m so grateful, that despite of my mediocre performance for my presentation last week, you gave me a second chance, to sing some mantras in front of the class. Thanks to this gesture, I felt supported instead of feeling ashamed by what I presented before. Only the positive spirit remained in my mind. Thank you for everything. I am so grateful and happy to be able to learn so much thanks to you. Love ~Coelia

Yogi Amitram, came to our advanced Yoga teacher training and brought the knowledge of the authentic Yoga teachings, which he is clearly and expert in. But, what amazed me most is that his wisdom of Yoga shined brightest through his example of character. He always carried himself as if he was in constant practice of Yogic principles, which to me, is the highest degree of mastery of Yoga.   If Amitram is not enlightened, he is surely AWAKE, in the Buddhist sense, meaning; he is most beautifully present in the moment, always charming, smiling, compassionate to his students, patient(even when being tested), and most thoughtful with his words and actions. Basically, a teacher’s teacher, and a master Yogi to boot, I can’t speak highly enough of him, both, as an example of a kind human being, and a leader in the field of Yogic studies. I have learned so much by observing him, listening to his lively and informative presentations and being around him.   Amitram is one of the best teachers precisely because he ‘gets’ people, the psychology of their mind, and finds the best approach to present his material at THEIR level of understanding.   Because he truly loves and cares for the tradition of Yoga his enthusiastic lectures, allegories and techniques have a way of exciting the imagination of the listener and have the potential to make the necessary connection and impact right away. I know for me personally, his way of teaching Yoga philosophy, pranayama and meditation was so; I was able to consider, contemplate and process the information immediately and taste the essential nectar of his teachings. Because Amitram is effective as a teacher and knowledgeable as a Yogi my personal experience from his class has altered and deepened my awareness and perception of myself on a more profound and subtle level. I have felt the power of his technique and words resonate in the energetic(koshas) layers of my body and therefore leave a forever imprint on my ability to regulate my senses and see to the very core of myself as a human being. Indeed, like Amitram said in class “to find yourself, look within, its already there”.   To arrive at this Yogic realization Amitram, through his daily, thoughtful guidance equipped each and every one of us with the confidence, technique and grace required on this journey into the self, and I can’t be grateful enough to this man for shining the light of Yoga onto us and revealing its gifts to the World. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, I am a better man and Yogi for having met you and learned from an authentic conduit of the mighty and timeless Hindu tradition of Yoga. Om Shanti Shanti Shanti ~Love

I did my Pranayama and Meditation sessions with Yogi Amitram in June in Koh Samui Vikasa YTT 2016. It was a very amazing experience in my life. I just finished my foundation teacher training in May 2016, only one week break, I continued my advance course directly. At the beginning, I didn’t think I would do well in the course, I was just a total beginner in Yoga, how could I finish two levels YTT in such a short time? I doubted myself a little bit, but just a while I trust myself again, because I always want to do my best no matter it will be. We did cleaning nostrils by salt water and Shankaprachalana and many crazy things I haven`t done before, I could not exactly tell how was going on in my mental and physical body, but just changed little by little. I was a girl who did like to go out all the time, couldn’t stay at home whole day, even couldn’t sit quietly for 10 minutes, but now I am more and more like quiet and alone, if day off, I prefer to stay in my small room, reading books, listening music or doing some Yin yoga practice. I am more and more enjoy the time with myself, to be awareness of the sensation of my mind and my physical body. Maybe this is how Yoga wants to teach us, I am still learning and discovering what happen in my future, Thanks Amitram, his teaching style was very easily to understand, he always used his own stories to answer our questions, which I like to use as well, you cannot teach people things from books, you better teach people something that you practiced already by yourself, according to your experience, people could understand very well, also this was a real example, and you have been here. However, I also believe everybody has different way to go through, just try your best to do everything you have passion to do, you will find yourself, it isn’t you, is self, your deeply mind, only you can find him/her, and try to be alone with him/her, listen to him/her, you will find your peace. I appreciated Amitram was my teacher and friend, he is a nice person and amazing teacher. ~Jin

I am back in Ireland now, but I am not sure for how long. I feel that yoga should become a bigger part of my life and as such, I think I may need to study another course, very soon. But I haven’t forgotten your words, ‘digest your first meal before going for another plate’. I am messaging you to share my thoughts with you in relation to your teachings. I entered into this yoga teacher training course with only an idea of what to expect, my main goal was to gain a deeper understanding of the physical aspects of my practise so that I could progress in my asanas. Now, looking back I realise that, although my physical practise improved, my greatest benefit was from the teachings of Yogi Amitram in yoga philosophy. His teachings have opened my eyes to the profound, life long affect that yoga philosophy can have on my life. For example, I have learned that my reaction to the world around me is a choice, that I can chose which emotion I wish to react with. This simple idea has the potential to improve my professional, personal and social life more than anything else I have ever learned. I am excited about implementing Yogi Amitram’s teachings into my life and would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of the universe as a whole or even their own mind. Namaste ~Leo.

Yogi Amitram is such a kind soul, it was clear from the minute I met him how much love he has for every single human being and it really shines through when he teaches. He is so full of knowledge and I have learned so much from him, but my favourite part is his humour and his view on life – and I can say that I came out of his classes as a happier and healthier person. Thank you for everything. Namaste ~Pála Margrét

Dear Amitram, Where to begin, and how to express how I feel and what you have done for me… You have played such a huge part in my journey up to this point, and I will be forever grateful. I have spent a collected time of about two months in this sala with you and i would never changed it for the world. You are truly an incredible person, rich with wisdom and knowledge, and a selfless heart to share this knowledge with others. You have enriched my life and helped me grow beyond words. I feel so privileged to have met you. You coming into my life is more than I could ever wished for. You are so humble, and always takes so much time to connect with me on a personal, professional and heartfelt level. Your guidance and support is that of a family members, and something that I would eternally be grateful for. You too are like a brother to me. Thank you so much. Warm regards, and kind wishes. With all my love. Namaste ~Roberto

Thank You beautiful brother I love you hugs! Just Feel Good – Share That! ~Ron Veldhuis B(Eng) PG(Dip) Founder

It as been a pleasure to have you as my teacher and friend. Your classes are very inspiring and special. Thanks to you I had the opportunity to expand my consciousness about yoga, pranayama, meditation and the life in general. You’re way to teach is great and all the information you have to us was clear and understandable. You transmit everything with grace and a big of humour, don’t taking the classes to serious and we all can have fun and learn at the same time 🙂 Your smile is spontaneous and genuine and you gave me joy in all our moments together. Thanks to you I went deeper in my knowledge of meditation , pranayama and yoga nidra. I realise how our thought consume our energy and don’t allow us to realise who we really are. Who I am? Who we are? For me we are beings of ligth , we are physical manifestation of source energy, we are part of the Devine. We are here to learn, experience this world, have joy and happiness and respect all other beings. We are here to learn how to be the best version of ourselfs and you are making a great job helping all of us finding our ways 🙂 I hope I’ll see you soon and have the opportunity to learn more from you and share more happy moments soon. I big hug and continue to inspire everyone with your wise words. The Devine light in me honours the Devine light in you. Namaste ~Alexandre Afonso

In March, 2018, my partner Misaki & i travelled to Yogi Amitram’s ashram, which sits on top of a very special mountain about an hour and a half drive from Rishikesh city. Below is a type of post-trip journal-list recounting some major points of the visit with Amitram.

Food: Upon arrival at Yogi Amitram’s ashram, we were greeted by his parents (who were staying there top help with cooking and tasks around the buildings and yard) and this was followed by lunch, our first actual meal in India. We had the amazing good fortune of being served real authentic Indian vegetarian (approximately 90% vegan) home cooking. I have been eating Indian food for years in Canada and Japan, and nothing matches the flavors of this Mama-ji’s kitchen magic. Let’s certainly hope that she makes a detailed recipe book for the Ashram to create a menu from.

Sleeping: When we arrived, the guest houses were not yet fully prepared. And even though i had mentioned to Amitram that i would be comfortable with anything, even a tent, he insisted that we take his personal room since the guesthouses had not yet been fully completed. Very gracious hospitality!

Fire puja: Every evening following sunset at the ashram there is a fire puja to honor Shiva. Fire puja would begin with lighting a wick in oil and Yogi Amitram would call on and greet Shiva (&Shakti???) through incantations. Once the fire was lit and Shiva called, we would chant 5 round of Gayatri Mantra followed by 5 rounds of Mantra. Yogi Amitram would usually add more chants to call upon and pay respect to Shiva & Shanti. Before the closing incantations, we would meditate from 5 minutes to 40 minutes, depending on the occasion. With closing incantations and a farewell to Shiva and Shakti, ash from the fire was placed on our foreheads to remind us to respect life and its passing. After fire puja we ate a light dinner. Even on days when we went into town and couldn’t return early enough, someone (in this case it was “Papa”) would light the fire and chant incantations regardless. At YogiAmitram’s ashram, the fire puja ritual is done at least once a day.

Asana Practice: i was given the inspiring opportunity of guiding 90-minute to 2-hour morning asana practice which included pranayama and meditation. Asana practice before breakfast is key for making a mind-body connection for heightened awareness (conscious & unconscious) throughout the day. So having this as part of our daily routine helped each day be an uplifting and mindful experience.

Discussions: After breakfasts and lunches, there were morning and afternoon discussions on topics such as yogic living, ecology, yoga history and folklore, yogic and zen philosophy & meditation practices and purposes. These were always stimulating, thought provoking and inspiring conversations that not only touch on yogic topics but also on everyday subjects like love, attachment, creativity, etc.

Reading & Reflection: Each day there was “free-time” allotted for personal time. The purpose was to give time for reading (the ashram has a selection of books on topics such as pranayama, anatomy, yogi biographies, esoteric practices, etc.) study, review, reflection, meditation, and/or  (if needed) a nap.

Meditation: Meditation could happen at any time, whether it be just a deeply personal moment of silence or in the small intimate group after a lecture or, as mentioned, just before ending fire puja. Yogi Amitram has a unique approach to guiding meditation; he sets a mood, gives some simple opening instructions, and after that, he allows the meditators to follow their own minds for deeper exploration. In other words, he doesn’t keep talking throughout the practice. In this way, Yogi Amitram is not trying to control nor dictate the experience. He gives the practitioner the space to “grow”.

Day-trips into Rishikesh: When the timing allowed it, we joined Yogi Amitram for a car ride into Rishikesh. We did this on three separate occasions. The first two times, Amitram had errands and shopping to do and he suggested we split up and look about the main tourist area of Rishikesh. It was around the end of an international yoga conference and the streets were crazy busy with yogi tourists, scooters driving on the walking bridge, taxis, cars & trucks all hustling and honking, cows nonchalantly obstructing any and all traffic, sadhus living along the side of the Ganga (Ganges) river… It was all quite impressive and tiring getting around and looking from shop to shop. As per Yogi Amitram’s suggestion, i managed to step into the Ganga, splash a bit of water on to my brow and the top of my head, and pay my respects to the Ganga and the flow of life it provides and represents. On the third trip into Rishikesh, we accompanied Amitram for his errands. In this way, we got a true taste of “local” Rishikesh. No tourist shops on that journey. We could see and really understand the struggle it is to get construction, plumbing, or even cleaning supplies around there, because there are no big home center hardware stores and suppliers are very small with very limited inventory. So, Amitram went from shop to shop looking for just a few small items, hoping that someone, somewhere had the supplies. Again, quite tiring but in a different way. The plus side of that excursion was the lassies and fresh coconut water we drank. Also that we went for our 2nd dinner at the krishna temple restaurant.  Again, after almost 30 years of eating Indian food, it ranks very high for taste, value and quantity. (The first time we ate there, we easily ordered way too much food. A delicious and super-filling mistake.)

In Conclusion: Now i am back in Japan and have returned to the weekly routine of providing English services as a teacher and as a writer. However, i keep the experience of the ashram with me and i keep in mind discussions & teachings of Yogi Amitram. Staying with him at his place was more than just inspiring, it had some life-changing effects; some subtle and some more obvious. It is as though something undefinable by words has emerged from inside of me. i not only feel a new sense of calm, but i am also experiencing more creativity overall. A priceless experience which continues to wave and ripple through “me”. If you are planning a trip to India or Rishikesh, i recommend getting in touch with Yogi Amitram or the ashram’s staff to find out what kind of activities, events or workshops might be happening. Or if nothing is scheduled, maybe you can visit to just spend reflective, resting and/or healing time there. Even though my stay was relatively short, the experience will stay with me for life. Thank you for reading. Namaste, warmest regards & love, ~Brian & Misaki (JAPAN)
